Question: “What is Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?”

Answer: When you think of lasers, you might think of sharks and Dr. Evil in the old Austin Powers movie, or you might think of grocery store scanners, or you might even think of laser pointers. However the use of lasers in the medical and health world has exploded over the past couple of decades. In fact, run a Google search for "LLLT" and you'll see all the research and science that now backs it up. LLLT stands for Low Level Laser Therapy and essentially it comes down to the use of a very specific wavelength of light in order to promote healing in our bodies. That's a very generic description so let's do a Cliff-notes dive into the basic science behind it, then talk about what it can help with and how to use it in our chiropractic clinic in Caton GA.

How does low-level laser therapy work in Canton GA?

We're going to talk science here, but we're going to stay surface-level, I promise. Remember back in high school when you had to memorize a pointless thing in Biology called the Kreb's Cycle? Well, you just lost that bet that you made with your high school Biology teacher that you'd never have to know this for the rest of your life. The Kreb's Cycle makes ATP. ATP is like the little batteries within our cells. ATP gives us the energy to heal and repair and stay healthy. The more ATP we have-->the better we repair ourselves and stay healthy. HERE'S the point: LLLT supercharges our body's ability to make more ATP by forcing the Kreb's Cycle into overdrive.

What conditions can LLLT help with?

Well now that we just made a biochemist out of you, let's talk about what this helps with. I want you to think of one underlying factor that is involved in practically every single disease or condition that humans suffer with. Think about it. Have it yet? 3....2....1....(inflammation). And guess what LLLT helps with? You got it! It reduces inflammation (by way of the whole biochemical thing we just talked about). So before I make a list here, put on your thinking cap and predict what are going to be the most common conditions LLLT helps with since you know it reduces inflammation. Here we go with a list of the Top 10 most common conditions it helps with:

  1. Neck and lower back pain
  2. Shoulder pain
  3. Plantar fasciitis
  4. Wound healing and scar reduction
  5. Post-surgery recovery
  6. Hair thinning and loss
  7. Autism/ADHD
  8. Acne
  9. Arthritis
  10. Fibromyalgia

How do you get LLLT done?

There are specific settings to use for LLLT depending on the condition, and there are specific techniques that can be done while performing an LLLT treatment, but the basics are pretty similar: a treatment consists of aligning the laser on the area of the body to be treated and/or other parts of the body that have nerve input to the area of the body to be treated. Treatments are typically performed for 5-10 minutes depending on the condition and most people report feeling nothing at all, or perhaps a faint sensation of relaxation and tingling. The majority of people feel some relief even after the first treatment and a typical condition may take 6-12 treatments.

Disclaimer: I love sharing health advice that I've learned over the last 15 years as a practicing Chiropractor. Yes, my office is at the top of our neighborhood, and yes, I have recently incorporated LLLT into my office. But I am very aware to make this column about general health, and not an advertisement for my office. I am not the only provider in town using LLLT and I encourage you to reach out to whoever is your trusted provider if you think this may help you or someone you know. The more ways you can help your body stay healthy naturally, the better off you'll be. Hopefully, this provided a good start, and as always...Become a Priority In Your Life!!
